In this one day workshop artist Mary-Ann will guide you in the specialist techniques she has developed to create your own hand painted fabric butterfly automaton on a vintage wooden cotton reel base.
You will learn how to paint fabric, create wire armature, form your butterfly’s body and wings, create the precision stainless steel wire pieces for the mechanism and use a miniature drill. Finally Mary-Ann will help you to assemble all the pieces you have created.
It will only be in this final assembly stage that the magic will begin to happen – much like watching a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis and trying out its wings for the first time – that the personality of your butterfly will emerge.
Your finished automaton will be approximately 13cm tall x 8cm wing span x 7cm long in size.
Although no previous experience is required it is recommended that you are used to being creative and comfortable with working in detail particularly with a paint brush and with needle and thread.
All tools and materials will be provided but you may like to bring along your own scissors and sewing kit.
Please note that due to the nature of the stainless steel wirework you will be creating, you must be capable of using pliers and wire cutters. This workshop is not suitable for those with weak hands and/or wrists.
